Before a note reaches you

You have finished a piece, felt smarter, and still could not find the sentence that would make the author quit.

We would rather send you fewer pages than send you that.

Something arrives. A filing. A thread everyone is passing around. A draft. A conversation that sounded clever at the time.

It does not get a warm welcome. That sounds rude. It is how a small shop stays off the loudspeaker.

Three ordinary questions:

• Who wrote this, and what do they need you to feel?
• What is missing — cost, tax, a stretch of time that does not flatter the picture?
• If we are wrong, how would we know?

If two honest reads disagree, both stay on the page. We do not tidy the fight after the outcome is known. That is how shops invent a past.

On this site, a person published it. Not a feed.

That means fit to read. It does not mean buy anything. It does not mean we will still agree next year. When we stop agreeing, we should be able to point at the sentence that broke.

You will not see the private pile, the family numbers, or the tripwires. You are not owed those. You are owed a straight line from “this showed up” to “this is on the site.”

I would rather you trust the habit than trust me. Habits you can watch. People you have to take on faith.

If that is more process than you want from a letter, other letters will treat you better. That is a clean split.
