After the tax line

A chart can be honest and still send you to the wrong door.

I learned that on an income name that looked cheap on the screen I liked. Yield was fat. The write-up wrote itself. Then I ran the number the way a person actually keeps money — after the cut that does not show on the chart.

The chart did not lie. I had asked it a thin question.

What “good” hides

Gross is a press number. It travels well. It skips what you keep.

I am not going to walk you through forms. I am not your accountant. This is not tax advice.

It is a habit: before a story about return gets to stay, we ask what is left when the obvious cuts are in. If the story only works on the pre-cut number, it is not finished.

What we will not publish

Our year. A worksheet. A ticker from that income name. A map of anyone’s trades.

You get the question we now ask. You do not get the family file.

Why this note exists

N1 said the picture was not enough. This is that sentence, written out far enough to use — and no further.

If a letter never mentions tax except as a footnote, it is selling a picture. Pictures are easy. What you keep is not.

Research, not advice. Not an order. Not tax counsel.
